Root Canal Treatment Coppell

What are root canals?

Root canals are a restorative procedure, aiming to reduce pain and salvage the tooth that has been extensively damaged by decay or other factors. In this procedure, the canals inside the roots of teeth are thoroughly cleaned and filled with a special filling, and the tooth could survive up to 10 years or more.

Who needs a root canal?

The tooth is composed of several layers, the innermost layer is called the nerve or the pulp of the tooth. When this pulp is compromised, then you would need a root canal. The pulp could be damaged due to a variety of reasons including:

  • Decay that has been eating at the tooth for so long without treatment, causing severe pain.
  • Fracture as when you bite down hard accidentally on a hard object, causing a part of the tooth to break, which exposes the pulp and also sever pain ensues.
  • Abscess which is an infection of the pulp system, either due to decay or other factors.

How would I know if I need a root canal?

As we said before, root canals are indicated when the pulp is damaged. The pulp is the most sensitive part of the tooth, so when it is damaged, you will feel severe pain. We don’t mean mild transient pain that subsides quickly, but deep pain that could last several hours, and deprive you of sleep. Other symptoms include swelling (which is probably a result of an abscess or infection) as well as pain on biting and chewing.

That being said, severe pain is not the only indication of needing a root canal. When you feel pain with hot and cold foods and drinks, you probably have some decay in your teeth. When this decay is removed, it may well have reached the pulp without you knowing. Traumas are also an indication of root canals, even if no pain is involved, since trauma leads to death of the pulp and the remnants need to be removed before they start causing problems.

How does the Root Canal Procedure in Coppell go?

After numbing the tooth, the root canal dentist Coppell would start by removing all the decay from the tooth using the turbine and some hand instruments. The turbine is also used to “punch a hole” in the roof of the pulp. This is called “gaining access”.

After that, a series of long, slender, needle like instruments called files are used to remove all the remnants of the pulp from the root canals. These files are used in a sequential order, increasing the size as we go on, making sure all the remnants are removed and the canals are clean before attempting to fill them. An irrigation agent is used to chemically disinfect the pulp. Finally, the canals are ready to be filled, and orange cones called gutta percha are used to fill the cleaned canal. A final restoration is placed over the opening made in the tooth to isolate the root canal system, and then you would be ready to receive a crown at a later visit.

How much pain is expected?

During the procedure, virtually no pain or very minimal pain is expected as your tooth would be anesthetized. After the effect of the anesthesia wears off, expect some discomfort (but nothing like the pain you felt before having done the procedure) for a few days. Mild pain on biting and chewing is also expected, that could be easily remedied with an over the counter pain killer. It is advisable to avoid hard and sticky foods until your tooth is fitted for a crown, since the teeth tend to become fragile and weak after the root canal procedures.
