What are Bone Grafts made of?

There are 3 main types of bone grafts:
  • Autogenous bone grafts: These are bone fragments harvested from the patient himself from areas where bone is strong and abundant, such as the chin or the bones of the thigh.
  • Xenograft: These bone fragments are bovine in origin, meaning they are extracted from the bones of cows and other farm animals, and treated in a special way to be compatible with the human body.
  • Alloplastic grafts: These are artificial particles made from plastic, also treated to be suitable to be placed inside the human body.

Which type is Better?

Autogenous bone grafts are by far the best type. They have virtually zero rejection rates, high biocompatibility and quite fast healing; however, they could cause problems in the site where the bone was harvested (this is called donor site morbidity) and therefore are used only when the benefits outweigh the risks.

Alloplastic grafts have low biocompatibility and more often than not result in failure, plus they are quite expensive and therefore are the last resort.

Xenografts are the most commonly used type. They have good properties of biocompatibility and safety, below average rejection rates and cause no problems with the donor site.

What are Bone Grafts used for?

Bone grafts are used to replace missing bone. The bone may have resorbed due to age, trauma, infection, periodontal disease and many other causes. The following procedures are the most common procedures needing bone grafts in dentistry:

  • Dental implants: Dental implants are screws placed inside the bone, but sometimes the amount and quality of bone is just not enough to withstand the biting and chewing forces. In these cases, bone grafts are used to increase the strength of the bone before attempting the implantation procedure.
  • Repair of pockets: When periodontal disease reaches and advanced stage, bone loss starts to occur. The patient starts feeling sensitivity to hot and cold foods and drinks, pain on biting and chewing, as well as spaces that start to develop between the teeth. Bone grafts are used to fill these spaces, treating all the above mentioned problems.
  • Ridge augmentation before dentures: Dentures are used as artificial replacements for teeth when they are lost or extracted. In most cases, the procedure is easy and straight forward, but some patients who have waited a great amount of time before seeking treatment suffer from resorbed and decreased bone, and therefore would need bone grafts to augment the remaining ridge so that the denture would be stable and comfortable.

How is the Dental Bone Grafting Treatment in Coppell works?

This is a surgical procedure, and depending on the amount and location of the surgery, it could be done either under local or general anesthesia. The surgical site is exposed with a scalpel, and cleaned thoroughly with salt water. Small holes are drilled in the bone of the site in preparation to receive the grafts. The grafts are then placed either inside or in proximity to these holes (according to the type of graft and type of surgery), and densely packed to ensure proper healing. The new bone is then covered with a protective layer (called the membrane) to ensure it doesn’t wash away with the blood flow), and the surgical site is closed with sutures.

A few months later, x-rays are used to confirm the appearance of new bone, and the patient is then ready for the original surgery intended.
